5 of the Greatest Latin Icons of Salsa

Latin Music: 5 of the Greatest Latin Icons of Salsa

Can You Hear that Beat?

When you hear great salsa music, it is almost impossible to keep your body from moving to the beat. Even non dancers find themselves tapping their feet and bobbing their heads.

There is a passion in latin music that we just don't get in rock and roll, or hip hop, or country. It is in the clave, in the rhythm that hits something at our core and picks us off our feet.

salsa music, salsa dance, salsa dancing, live latin music, clave

5 of the Greatest Salsa Icons

There are so many latin bands now. But the below few have established themselves as salsa icons.

Celia Cruz

Known to many as the most influencial female figure in the history of cuban music. Celia Cruz was a Cuban salsa singer, and was one of the most successful Cuban performers of the 20th century, with twenty-three gold albums to her name. She was renowned internationally as the "Queen of Salsa," as well as "La guarachera de Cuba" You can hardly say salsa music nowadays without Celia Cruz coming to mind. One of the most popular songs being "La vida es un Carnival"salsa music, celia cruz, live salsa music

El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico

Commonly known as El Gran Combo, is a Puerto Rican Salsa music orchestra. It is Puerto Rico's most successful musical group, and one of Salsa's most famous groups across Latin America. Since many of the genre's legendary singers have been members of the orchestra, the band has been given the moniker La Universidad de la Salsa (The University of Salsa)

Oscar Emilio León Simoza

Better known as Oscar D'León is a Venezuelan musician who became internationally famous for his salsa music. In Spanish, he is known as El Sonero del Mundo ("the Improviser of the World"). His most famous song is perhaps "Llorarás,". Besides from being a great sonero, he is also showman who knows how to entertain people. He has more than 20 years experience in show business and has recorded 60 albums.A master of dynamics, D'León achieves an exquisite interplay between his lithe, lusty tenor and his trademark, typically Cuban, voz de vieja (old woman's voice) nasal chorus.

Frankie Ruiz

Jose Antonio Torresola Ruiz also known as "El Papa de la Salsa" made significant contributions to salsa music and specifically to the "salsa sensual" movement, also known as salsa romantica. He helped to revive salsa at a time when its popularity was on a downturn. Ruiz became one of the first idols youth related to because of his own young age, handsome good looks, and true singing ability. A good example of his talents is this song, Bailando from his Serie 32 release.

Hector Lavoe

Hector Lavoe also known as La Voz (the voice) is one of the greats of Salsa. His passionate demeanor was in every part of his life. He never did anything half way. This aspect of his personality shaped his music career. Hector possessed a talent comprised of many elements including, great voice, clear enunciation, marvelous phrasing, and lyrical interpretation. His quick whit and great sense of humor is evident in his tremendous ability to improvise or sonear. During live performances, he never sang a song the same way twice.

Salsa Music Today:

These artists have set the scene for how salsa music is today. You will still here great songs now and for years to come in the salsa clubs. These are just a few of the talented artists in the salsa scene, but they have made a lasting impact. Keep an eye out for the bands that are starting today, they will be the ones to shape our salsa future.

Elvis Crespo Live at Roccapulco Super Club, San Francisco

Elvis Crespo Live

Come see a latin music legend. This is a performance you will not want to miss!!

Friday July 11th

Roccapulco Supper Club

3140 Mission Street

San Francisco, CA

Tickets: $40.00

About Elvis Crespo:

Elvis Crespo was born on 30 July, 1971 in New York City. At age six he moved to Guaynabo, Puerto Rico with his mother, where he grew up dreaming of becoming a baseball player. By age 14, Crespo had realized that he did not have the required skills and devoted himself to managing baseball teams.

However, he also showed an interest in music and at age 17 he joined the Willie Berrios orchestra. He later moved on to other music groups including the merengue band of Toño Rosario. Deciding he should complement his music budding career with formal studies, he enrolled in the Metropolitan University and pursued a business management degree. His formal studies were derailed when he got the opportunity to be the lead singer in Grupo Manía. He seized the chance and acheived great success over the course of the next three years with that band.

His success led him to try a solo career with his own orchestra with the support of his record label: Sony Discos. His debut solo album Suavemente became an international hit and best seller; breaking sales records in Puerto Rico and abroad and winning him a Grammy nomination in 1999 for Best Tropical Music Album”. The album included the hit title track: Suavemente. Although Ricky Martin took the award, Crespo won recognition from the House of Representatives in Puerto Rico and other international awards for his efforts.

He followed up his success of the “Suavemente” album with a concert series in Puerto Rico’s Bella Artes cultural center and with his second production: Píntame. This second album included hits such as “Por el caminito” and the title track: “Píntame”.

He travelled extensively and his songs dominated the charts during 1999. In Venezuela, he won the Orquidea de Diamante (Diamond Orchid) prize and was celebrated at Chile’s Festival de Viña del Mar. His music became equally popular throughout Spain, Italy, Belguim and other parts of Europe. Perhaps most telling was the recognition he received in the Dominican Republic; birthplace of the merengue genre.

At the height of his career, Crespo received his second Grammy nomination and this time won the award. He has decidedly won the top position of merengue exponent in Puerto Rico with more than four million albums sold. His goals for the year 2000 was to complete his first concert in Japan and debut in Australia.

Anthony Cruz, El Dia De San Juan, Roccapulco

Celebrating El Dia De San Juan.

Anthony Cruz Performing Live at

Roccapulco Supper Club

Saturday June 28th

Roccapulco Supper Club

3140 Mission Street. San Francisco, CA

Tickets: $25.00

About Anthony Cruz:

Salsa vocalist Anthony Cruz was born in New Jersey, footsteps away from the simmering New York salsa scene. As a child of only five, Cruz distinguished himself via talent shows and competitions as a sonero to watch. He began working shortly thereafter, singing coro for Pedro Conga y Su Orquesta Internacional, as well as singing sessions for Roberto Lugo, Pedro Arroyo, and Mario Ortiz, to name a few. He was signed to the Musical Productions label, releasing his solo debut, Algo Nuevo, in 1990. The disc went gold, generating radio hits like "Si Supieras" and "Tu Traicion." Cruz's follow-up release, Para Ti in 1993, generated some airplay, but experienced significantly less success than its predecessor. Cruz's third self-titled release featured the popular song "Cuanto Te Amo," getting him back on the charts after a six-year slump. Una Vez Mas was released in 1998, and was met again with interest if not impressive sales. Lacking a strong fan base in the States, Cruz spent the next period of time touring extensively throughout Latin America. One of few artists who has stayed with one label for the majority of his recording career, Cruz released two more records with Musical Productions, Un Nuevo Amanecer in 2002 and Para Mi Gente in 2007. The former generated a good deal of radio play through 2003 and 2004 with songs like "Que Bombon" and "Ven."
