John Santos Quintet at Yoshis!! San Francisco Salsa Events, San Francisco Salsa Bands
April 18, 2008 by Salsa Dance San Francisco
Filed under Salsa Dance News in San Francisco
It will be an epic night of Dinner and music at Yoshis in Oakland or San Francisco.
I was fortunate enough to see Spanish Harlem play a few months ago after feasting on sake and great sushi. The combination is brilliant. You enjoy amazing japanese cuisine and then casually stroll into the jazz club where you enjoy live music with even more food and drinks. When I saw Spanish Harlem in Oakland there wasn't really a dance floor, but there is no way to keep salsa dancers from getting up and doing there thing. So the Salseros made space and the energy in that room was amazing. I don't imagine this night with the John Santos Quintet will be any different.
John Santos Quintet

Show times are:
Mon 9 & 11
Tues 8 & 10

A special tribute in honor of Israel “Cachao” Lopez

The John Santos Quintet, whose acclaimed CD Papa Mambo is dedicated to one of the mambo’s founding fathers, the legendary bassist/composer/arranger Israel “Cachao” Lopez, will make their Yoshi’s San Francisco debut with several special guests. (El maestro Cachao himself had been scheduled to appear, but in light of his March 22 passing at age 89, this concert will be a tribute.) The quintet consists of the Bay Area’s top Latin-jazz artists: John Calloway (flute), Saul Sierra (bass), Marco Diaz (piano), Cuban percussion pioneer Orestes Vilató, and four-time Grammy nominee Santos on congas and percussion. Also joining the Santos Quintet for this special two-night presentation are Tito Puente’s conga/bongo mainstay Johnny Rodriguez, violinist Anthony Blea, vocalist Orlando Torriente, saxophonist Melecio Magdaluyo, and percussionist Javier Navarrette. (This appearance coincides with the world premiere of DOC Film Institute's Cachao: Uno Mas (docfilm.sfsu.edu) at the 51st San Francisco International Film Festival, on Monday, April 28, at Sundance Kabuki Cinemas, 1881 Post Street. Jellys Cafe Salsa Club, San Francisco Salsa Dancing on Sunday. Salsa Dance on Sundays at Jellys
April 8, 2008 by Salsa Dance San Francisco
Filed under Salsa Dance News in San Francisco
This is by far my favorite thing to do on Sunday's. Jelly's is located at 295 Terry Francois Street, Pier 50, San Francisco. It is a little out of the way, a destination only spot.
This is an afternoon, early evening event that starts around 4:30 and goes till 9:00. Cover is $10. The club is nothing special really, but maybe that is why I like it. No distractions, just great dancing. They have a live band that usually kicks in around 5:00. Inside is a medium sized wooden dance floor. When the dancing begins and the afternoon rolls on and dancers roll in, the dancing spills out onto the back patio where concrete is no reason to stop dancing. Did I mention the Mojitos and the amazing food yet?? Well, the Mojitos are great, served in pint glasses so you feel you are getting your moneys worth. And the smell of the grilled chicken, beans and rice, gets your juices flowing. I feel like my friends Spanish grandmother has invited me into her kitchen and that is what she came out with, a real authentic spanish/Mexican meal. With the live band, mojitos, food, and salsa dancing, it is the recipe for a spectacular day. The only thing missing is maybe a beach. But it is right on the water so we are getting close there too. I am a huge fan as you can tell. So I highly recommend this day to anyone. The level of dancers is across the board but never short of experienced dancers. All in all it is not a place to show off your moves but to get lost in the salsa rhythm.
