It will be an epic night of Dinner and music at Yoshis in Oakland or San Francisco.
I was fortunate enough to see Spanish Harlem play a few months ago after feasting on sake and great sushi. The combination is brilliant. You enjoy amazing japanese cuisine and then casually stroll into the jazz club where you enjoy live music with even more food and drinks. When I saw Spanish Harlem in Oakland there wasn't really a dance floor, but there is no way to keep salsa dancers from getting up and doing there thing. So the Salseros made space and the energy in that room was amazing. I don't imagine this night with the John Santos Quintet will be any different.

A special tribute in honor of Israel “Cachao” Lopez

The John Santos Quintet, whose acclaimed CD Papa Mambo is dedicated to one of the mambo’s founding fathers, the legendary bassist/composer/arranger Israel “Cachao” Lopez, will make their Yoshi’s San Francisco debut with several special guests. (El maestro Cachao himself had been scheduled to appear, but in light of his March 22 passing at age 89, this concert will be a tribute.) The quintet consists of the Bay Area’s top Latin-jazz artists: John Calloway (flute), Saul Sierra (bass), Marco Diaz (piano), Cuban percussion pioneer Orestes Vilató, and four-time Grammy nominee Santos on congas and percussion. Also joining the Santos Quintet for this special two-night presentation are Tito Puente’s conga/bongo mainstay Johnny Rodriguez, violinist Anthony Blea, vocalist Orlando Torriente, saxophonist Melecio Magdaluyo, and percussionist Javier Navarrette. (This appearance coincides with the world premiere of DOC Film Institute's Cachao: Uno Mas (docfilm.sfsu.edu) at the 51st San Francisco International Film Festival, on Monday, April 28, at Sundance Kabuki Cinemas, 1881 Post Street.
