DANCERS –
WAIT FOR THE MAMBO TO START TURNING
Every salsa event i go to in SF, the song starts, and people start turning. my apologies, but la salsa no se baila asi (is not danced that way).
Listen to the music. Most salsa songs are based on the guaracha or son montuno forms, which have introductions, mambos, and sometimes percussive breakdowns. The introduction is just that, it lets you dance around with your partner, get to know them, feel them out. The mambo comes later, and is generally announced by a dramatic horn figure, at which point the song picks up pace and the cowbell, or cencerro, really kicks in.
Listen for this! This is when you start your turns. If you come out turning, you use up all your turns early, get tired, and have nothing new to do when then mambo hits.
Instead, use the time during the introduction to float around, move your partner, and get loose. Then when the mambo starts, POW! dale con tus vueltas y rumbea! (do your turns and get into it) on the percussive breakdowns, you can let your partner loose and just shake it, do a little solo dancing.
Then when the mambo starts again, grab hold again and go for it. Again, listen to the music.
It will tell you when to dance, when to turn, when to breakdown, when to come back…

Join Pellejo Seco as they perform an evening of eclectic musical sounds rooted in Traditional Cuban music to help benefit victims of the recent hurricanes in Cuba. A portion of the proceeds will support the Disarm Education Fund providing urgently needed medical aid to Cuba.
The damage has displaced millions of Cubans, destroying homes, schools, hospitals, factories, and crops. The Disarm Education Fund has been in existence for over thirty years and has been fighting the devastating effects of immoral and unjust foreign policy as they lend a hand to its innocent victims. They provide vital humanitarian assistance, life-saving medicine, and effective advocacy. Disarm has a strong, unequaled track record of providing urgently needed medical aid to Cuba, and their longstanding partners at hospitals and community clinics throughout Cuba are struggling to assist hurricane victims, working in dangerous rubble without basic, life-saving medicine and equipment.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
The line-up for this special evening will include: Ivan Camblor, vocals and tres (Cuban Guitar); Livan Montoya, vocals and bass; Mario Silva, trumpet; Osvaldo Carvajal, vocals and percussion; Felix Samuel Perez Diaz, vocals; Sulkary Valverde, vocals.

About Pellego Seco:
Without a doubt, Pellejo Seco marks a new plateau in Latin music in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in the East Bay in 2004 by Ivan Camblor, this eclectic group has its roots in Traditional Cuban music and performs only original compositions The group produces a creative sound which combines the exquisite, popular and fantastic. In its evolutionary process, Pellejo Seco has caught its own distinct flavor which intertwines progressive Fusion Rock, Latin pop, Brazilian, Flamenco, Afro-Cuban and Jazz. Ivan Camblor named the band, Pellejo Seco, and interprets it to mean “Raw Hide.” For Ivan the name has many meanings, one of which is to describe the dry and leathered skin of a “campesino” or farmer. “Enganchate,” is the first CD for Pellejo Seco. The title can be loosely translated to mean “Grab on.” As you listen to this album, you will definitely want to grab onto the exciting rollercoaster of musical themes and genres which winds you through a world full of complex energetic dance rhythms and beautiful love ballads. All the music on this album is composed by Ivan Camblor Allende. Ivan is a new composer from Havana, Cuba. In Cuba, Ivan played his Tres (a Cuban guitar) with many traditional Cuban bands, many of which performed his songs. Other accomplishments for Ivan include a collaboration with Edesio Alejandro, the most prominent Cuban Soundtrack artist today, on two scores for the film, ”Hacerse el Sueco.” Ivan moved to the United States in November 2004 to be with his wife, Deborah Simon-Weisberg, who is also featured on the CD singing “Calma.”
