About La Taza de Cafe:

La Taza de Cafe’s founding ethic rests within the concept of “Origines”. “Origenes” or Origins in English, implies the creation of something that grows, expands, and endeavors toward future and permanence. In 1940’s Cuba, the literary and artistic group, “Origines”, sought to capture in its renderings the expression of what it was to be Cubano, and in a greater sense “Latino” -the peoples and races of Central and South America and the Caribbean. This is meant as a fully humanizing endeavor, it is to say: We are happy, unconstrained, extroverted; We like to play, socialize and create, but at the same time we have a profound and deep rooted ethical tradition based on love for justice, accountability and solidarity. Thought and action are grounded in a sense of servise and social responsibility.

Food, like many other facets of Latin American culture, reflects a vigor for life at its richest and a love of sociability, continuing a tradition of warmth and hospitality. La Taza de Café embraces this concept of community; the organic provision of product and service that tantalizingly fills a gap commercially, culturally, and socially; at the same time providing a space in which business people can find a “shot” of charm, solace or inspiration after their busy work day. While, of course, providing the most uniquely flavorful, and a savory menu in the likes of which there is a large demand and an unfound niche within the wholly comparable Cuba and Latin America we call Oakland.
