The damage has displaced millions of Cubans, destroying homes, schools, hospitals, factories, and crops. The Disarm Education Fund has been in existence for over thirty years and has been fighting the devastating effects of immoral and unjust foreign policy as they lend a hand to its innocent victims. They provide vital humanitarian assistance, life-saving medicine, and effective advocacy. Disarm has a strong, unequaled track record of providing urgently needed medical aid to Cuba, and their longstanding partners at hospitals and community clinics throughout Cuba are struggling to assist hurricane victims, working in dangerous rubble without basic, life-saving medicine and equipment.

The line-up for this special evening will include: Ivan Camblor, vocals and tres (Cuban Guitar); Livan Montoya, vocals and bass; Mario Silva, trumpet; Osvaldo Carvajal, vocals and percussion; Felix Samuel Perez Diaz, vocals; Sulkary Valverde, vocals.

About Pellego Seco:
Without a doubt, Pellejo Seco marks a new plateau in Latin music in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in the East Bay in 2004 by Ivan Camblor, this eclectic group has its roots in Traditional Cuban music and performs only original compositions The group produces a creative sound which combines the exquisite, popular and fantastic. In its evolutionary process, Pellejo Seco has caught its own distinct flavor which intertwines progressive Fusion Rock, Latin pop, Brazilian, Flamenco, Afro-Cuban and Jazz. Ivan Camblor named the band, Pellejo Seco, and interprets it to mean “Raw Hide.” For Ivan the name has many meanings, one of which is to describe the dry and leathered skin of a “campesino” or farmer. “Enganchate,” is the first CD for Pellejo Seco. The title can be loosely translated to mean “Grab on.” As you listen to this album, you will definitely want to grab onto the exciting rollercoaster of musical themes and genres which winds you through a world full of complex energetic dance rhythms and beautiful love ballads. All the music on this album is composed by Ivan Camblor Allende. Ivan is a new composer from Havana, Cuba. In Cuba, Ivan played his Tres (a Cuban guitar) with many traditional Cuban bands, many of which performed his songs. Other accomplishments for Ivan include a collaboration with Edesio Alejandro, the most prominent Cuban Soundtrack artist today, on two scores for the film, ”Hacerse el Sueco.” Ivan moved to the United States in November 2004 to be with his wife, Deborah Simon-Weisberg, who is also featured on the CD singing “Calma.”

About Tito Garcia:
Ernesto “Tito” Garcia is an optometrist in the predominantly Latino mission district of San Francisco.
I have been playing Latin Music profesionally since 1971. There are an incredible amount of talented musicians just waiting for the opportunity to learn how to play what is known as Modern, Popular Salsa-Mambo music of today.
I created this type of discipline Orquesta in order to provide the General Public an example of what i call Jazz-Influenced, High-Energy Latin Music. We play Salsa in the traditional format of the pioneers of this music and add our own West Coast “Tinge.”
We also dip into our bag of Salsa Tricks to bring back some of the Mambo’s, Cha-Cha-Cha’s and Boleros that this generation missed out on.
We take full advantage of our Multi-Cultural or “International” array of musicians in this area and thus the name of “Internacional.” We vary in size from as many as 16 performing musicians to as small a combo as 4-5 musicians. Depending on our performance necessities.

Alonso Brito, The kind of Music that gets under your skin!
November 25, 2008 by Salsa Crazy San Francisco

Discover the Old Style Cuban Music of
Alonso Brito!
When I hear the music of Alonso Brito, I feel myself transported to an old cafe somewhere in Havana, with the smell of cigars in the air and the heat in the air assisting in the slow grind of Cuban couples dancing to the sultry rhythms. It is how i picture real Latin music to be. You can feel in the song that their is Latin passion behind it. You just can’t fake emotion in songs like this.
“Alonso is like no other contemporary salsa singer - part Mick Jagger, part Caetano Veloso and part Desi Arnaz on acid” - Los Angeles Times
“In the 1950’s America fell in love with the Mambo. It’s 2008 and we are already falling in love with Alonso Brito and his brand of Cuban music, he is really talented, extremely talented” -KPFK Radio
About Alonso Brito:
Born in La Habana, Cuba during the Golden Fifties, Alonso Brito had an idyllic childhood that ran parallel to Hollywood classics of that period. At the age of nine, he was living in Cuba when Fidel Castro’s revolution arose. Political and civil unrest forced him to flee the country, never to return. During a landmark historical period in American history, Alonso arrived in Miami, Florida in September 1960.
Thrust into early adulthood though being barely ten years old, Brito has been witness to events that have formed our country and left an indelible mark in his memory. The short-lived presidency of John F. Kennedy, The Birmingham Riots, The Cuban Missile Crisis, the civil rights movement and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, manned space travel and the Vietnam War are moments in time that some of us lived while some of us only read about them in books—Alonso Brito has done both and uses it to not only give depth to the life he leads, but volume to the music he shares.
Those wonder years, as well as those of his pre-emmigration childhood are reflected throughout his music. Alonso, or “AB”, along with his dear friend Chris McClure have prepared a style of show that has not been seen since the 1950’s. Nothing in the United States and few similar performers are comparable to the style, culture and substance of the music and performances that AB brought from Cuba to gift us. His journey, his convictions, his spirit and his music have become the epitome of what it is to be Cuban-American.

There are three different versions of Cumbia dependent on the region), Pachanga (fast footwork and fast spins Colombian style salsa (a fusion of Cha cha cha and Mambo). Originally only 7 steps - now hundreds), and Vallenato (This traditional Colombian dance has a number of distinctive rhythms: Paseo, Merengue). Come see how the real Columbians have a fiesta.

Tierra, the band named “Best R&B Vocal Group” by four leading magazines including Billboard. They started their career in East Los Angeles with a blend of rock, pop, jazz, R&B and salsa. The result was a Latin R&B rhythm which produced classics like “Together”, “Gonna Find Her”, “Memories” and “Zoot Suit Boogie”. The band’s quarter century commitment shows a dedication that can only be understood by listening to their smooth and soulful sounds.
Tierra was the first Latino band to have four songs on the national chart and two simultaneously in the Top 100. They have performed in such prestigious shows such as Carnegie Hall, The American Music Awards, American Bandstand, and The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
Tierra is widely known to have played a role in opening doors for other Latino and non-Latino superstars of today, including comedian Paul Rodriguez, Arsenio Hall, Sheila E., Gloria Estefan, Los Lobos, Latino Comic of the Year, Rudy Moreno, and more.
Leader of the band, Rudy Salas holds the foundation of the group strong as he leads TIERRA into the new millenium. With their new CD, “Welcome to Cafe East L.A.”, a billingual album “Two Worlds/Dos Mundos”, and a recently released Greatest Hits album, this is one band that will not stop!
Puro Bandido was formed by Jose “El Bandido” Mayorga in 1979 whose vision and dream to form a band to fit his unique persona and that would capture the true San Francisco Mission District Experience! He carefully scoped out the late 70’s music scene and hand picked the best of the best in local bands and recruited two original members to join the Bandido Posse. Richard Segovia & Rolando “Choco” Contreras that would bring his vision and sound to life and have captured the True Mission District Culture, Style & SAVOR! Jose “El Bandido” Mayorga may you rest easy knowing that YOUR DREAM LIVES ON THROUGH PURO BANDIDO!!!! PURO BANDIDO is more than a refreshing new musical group - it is a new attitude and an eclectic new sound that mesmerizes its audiences with its incredible stage presence, driving rhythms, soaring guitars, and precise musical execution. Puro Bandido was formed by Jose Mayorga in 1978. Jose, now deceased, was joined by Richard Segovia and Rolando Contreras keeping Jose’s dreams alive with the other members of Puro Bandido. The music is high energy, Latin Rock and was formed in the Mission District of San Francisco. Puro Bandido was instrumental in the development of Border Rock - crossing all borders; having no boundaries. Their Sound is a combination of old school and new sounds created by a combination of a driving percussion, a rhythm section incomparable and vocals to match.
Latin Affect was formed in early 2005 and is made up of nine of the most talented musicians in the bay area. Musicians that have shared the stage with International Artist such as Santana, Malo, Tierra, Tower-of-Power, Little-Joey y La Familia, Niel Young, Bill Champlin, Joe Baker, John Garcia, and many many more. Latin Affect is one of the bay areas top bands and have a proven record of pleasing audiences whether for an intimate gathering or a large concert crowd. They bring an exciting mix of Old School, Funk, Latin Rock, Oldies, Salsa, Cumbias, & Tex Mex. Latin Affect is the musical soul of the people.

Check Out the Monterey Salsa Freestyle Championships This Friday!!

Enter to Win and Compete in the Monterey Salsa
Freestyle Championships
Friday, August 29th
For location and more info visit:
It’s on! The hottest dance contest in the Monterey Bay is now underway, and you know Monterey Salsa is about to crown the baddest salsa dancers in the 831.
Monterey Salsa Freestyle Contest is now in EFFECT! This contest is designed for one thing… to find the best dancers in the 831. Period.
Having seen and judged tons of other contests, Monterey Salsa has created a set of rules guaranteed to provide maximum excitement and to find out who REALLY is the best in the 831. This contest is not only going to be more FAIR than traditional contests, it’s going to be way more suspenseful. So how does it work? Let’s find out…
YOU PICK YOUR PARTNER
You will need a dance partner. If you have one, cool. If not, Monterey Salsa will try to help you find one.
MONTEREY SALSA PICKS THE MUSIC
We want to find the best dancers, not the best choreographers. And, real dancers can rip to ANY music. So, on the day of the contest, Monterey Salsa will select the music that you will dance to. You will not know in advance what your song will be. You will just have to be ready to rip to whatever comes on. This will filter out the REAL salseros from the imposters.
CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKETS
Instead of the traditional format of all the couples dancing at once, Monterey Salsa will be setting up brackets like a real tournament. The tournament will be single elimination, and couples will compete heads up until a winner is crowned. More below…
TWO PAIRS ENTER, ONE PAIR LEAVES
That’s right, we gettin Thunderdome on this!!! When it is time to compete, the competing couples will step on the dance floor. Neither couple will know what the song will be. Once the song starts, both couples will start dancing. When the song ends, a winner will be selected. One couple will advance in the tournament, the other will be eliminated.
$500 CASH PRIZE. WINNER TAKE ALL.
The winning couple will receive $500 cash and the title of “Monterey Salsa Freestyle Champion.” There will be no prizes for any of the losers.
Check out the video from the last two contests to get an idea of how the game goes….

About Cafe Bella:
The interior of the restaurant is very clean, with lots of light from the large windows that face east. Dabbas calls the decor “country rustic,” with a yellowish paint scheme he dubs “Butter and Eggs.” He even attempted to capture the city’s blending of tradition and innovation in the building’s design.
Café Bella features a full bar, framed by sandstone bricks, from which Dabbas’s small brewery dispenses two styles of beer, a pilsner and a stout. “I was doing it at home and I wanted to take it to the next level,” he said of the brewing operation.
The food is described as “California comfort cuisine.”

Sonora Carruseles Playing live at Roccapulco
With nine albums to it’s credit and over twelve years of existence, Columbia’s Sonora Carruseles has perfected a trademark sound that is cherished by salsa lovers all over the world. There’s some seriously powerful stuff to be found in their music: spidery piano lines, tight polyrhythms, explosive brass riffs, staccato cowbell patterns and impossibly nasal choruses that are just too hard to resist. Sonora Carruseles pays a moving tribute to old, hardcore salsa while at the same time revamping this nearly forgotten classical style.

TIEMPO LIBRE
Grammy nominated Tiempo Libre is one of the hottest young latin bands today. Equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs and dance venues, the members of the Miami-based band are true modern heirs to the rich tradition of the music of their native Cuba.
Tiempo Libre’s members were all classically trained in Cuba’s premiere conservatories at a time when it was illegal to listen to American songs on the radio. Now, the group is a hit in the U.S. and abroad, celebrated for its incendiary, joyful performances of timba, an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of high-voltage Latin jazz and the seductive rhythms of son.
Schooled in different Havana conservatories and all enjoying thriving careers in Latin music performing, touring and recording with such artists as Albita, Cachao, Arturo Sandoval, NG La Banda, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Isaac Delgado, Roberto Torres, and DLG these seven extraordinary musicians came together to realize their collective musical dream: to create the first authentic all Cuban Timba Band in the United States. This eagerness to share their music with others led these multi-talented individuals to come together between projects to develop their new style together. Hence the name Tiemp Libre (Free Time).

About La Taza de Cafe:
La Taza de Cafe’s founding ethic rests within the concept of “Origines”. “Origenes” or Origins in English, implies the creation of something that grows, expands, and endeavors toward future and permanence. In 1940’s Cuba, the literary and artistic group, “Origines”, sought to capture in its renderings the expression of what it was to be Cubano, and in a greater sense “Latino” -the peoples and races of Central and South America and the Caribbean. This is meant as a fully humanizing endeavor, it is to say: We are happy, unconstrained, extroverted; We like to play, socialize and create, but at the same time we have a profound and deep rooted ethical tradition based on love for justice, accountability and solidarity. Thought and action are grounded in a sense of servise and social responsibility.
Food, like many other facets of Latin American culture, reflects a vigor for life at its richest and a love of sociability, continuing a tradition of warmth and hospitality. La Taza de Café embraces this concept of community; the organic provision of product and service that tantalizingly fills a gap commercially, culturally, and socially; at the same time providing a space in which business people can find a “shot” of charm, solace or inspiration after their busy work day. While, of course, providing the most uniquely flavorful, and a savory menu in the likes of which there is a large demand and an unfound niche within the wholly comparable Cuba and Latin America we call Oakland.
