Don’t Miss Spanish Harlem Orquesta!!
Friday April 24th, 2009
Roccapulco Supper Club
3140 Mission Street
San Francisco, CA
About Spanish Harlem Orquestra:
The Spanish Harlem Orchestra channels the vintage salsa sounds of El Barrio in the 1960s and ’70s with full-bodied big band style, vocals by turns suave and soaring, and crisp new arrangements of classic repertoire. With intoxicating grooves and dazzling improvisational prowess, Hernandez’s band performs an exhilarating program of rumbas, cha-cha-chas, mambos, son montunos, and other styles from the golden era of Latin dance music.
“Our music style is the original sound of New York old school “Salsa dura” (heavy salsa) that was played in the early years by our pioneers,” says Oscar. “That sound has been lost and we want to keep it alive while educating the new generations (and music lovers in general) on the true musical roots of our culture.” Oscar adds, “we’ve brought back the essence of what makes this music great and are keeping the salsa spirit alive in our recordings and shows.”

Just a Salsa Tip for the Leaders!

DANCERS -
WAIT FOR THE MAMBO TO START TURNING
Every salsa event i go to in SF, the song starts, and people start turning. my apologies, but la salsa no se baila asi (is not danced that way).
Listen to the music. Most salsa songs are based on the guaracha or son montuno forms, which have introductions, mambos, and sometimes percussive breakdowns. The introduction is just that, it lets you dance around with your partner, get to know them, feel them out. The mambo comes later, and is generally announced by a dramatic horn figure, at which point the song picks up pace and the cowbell, or cencerro, really kicks in.
Listen for this! This is when you start your turns. If you come out turning, you use up all your turns early, get tired, and have nothing new to do when then mambo hits.
Instead, use the time during the introduction to float around, move your partner, and get loose. Then when the mambo starts, POW! dale con tus vueltas y rumbea! (do your turns and get into it) on the percussive breakdowns, you can let your partner loose and just shake it, do a little solo dancing.
Then when the mambo starts again, grab hold again and go for it. Again, listen to the music.
It will tell you when to dance, when to turn, when to breakdown, when to come back…

Conjunto Karabali is the Bay Area’s newest and hottest Latin dance band, featuring some of the finest talent in the Latin music field. The band is co-led by 2 of the United States’ most renowned percussionists, Mike Spiro and Karl Perazzo, who have joined forces to create a group specifically for the dancer’s enjoyment.
They describe Karabali’s style as “old school” salsa, and they bring to the Bay Area for the first time the traditional NY conjunto sound, popularized by Johnny Pacheco, Conjunto Clasico and Conjunto Libre. This band is about swing and joyful energy, and the dancers can’t wait to hit the floor when Karabali kicks into high gear.
The band boasts a who’s-who of SF Latin music all-stars in its line-up, starting of course with its leaders, Mike and Karl. These two internationally recognized drummers have performed and recorded with almost every major Latin artist of the last 30 years, from Eddie Palmieri to Carlos Santana, from Tito Puente to Celia Cruz.

San Francisco, CA 94133

About the Cigar Bar:
Tucked away, down some inconspicuous stairs on Montgomery Street in North Beach, you will find a San Francisco Jewel called the Cigar Bar. It attracts locals and foreigners from all different parts of the world. I feel like I am being transported to some little place in Spain or Cuba when I enter the warmly lit bar. I am drawn in by the live Latin music playing from the small tiled dance-floor.
This isn’t your normal Salsa Club, well it isn’t a Salsa Club at all. It is a place where people go to enjoy a selection of tapas, great tequila (well this is a personal note), wine, live music, cigars of course, and now salsa dancing.
It feels a bit how salsa dancing was born, not in the big clubs, but in small venues where people are drinking, dining and then letting the music move them to the dance-floor.
Music:
The Cigar Bar & Grill is a leading San Francisco venue to hear live music. We are committed to providing mainstream & Latin Jazz from leading Bay Area Musicians. Don’t miss out on a truly unique San Francisco music experience!
Live Music every Thursday at 9:30pm, and Friday & Saturday nights at 10pm
Offering the Bay Area’s best in Salsa, Cuban Son, Merengue, Samba, and Afro Cubano
Salsa Dancing, Latin Dancing encouraged!
Drinks:
The Cigar Bar & Grill features a comprehensive selection of premium rums, single malts, cognacs, wines and ports. The Mojito is a favorite specialty amongst the guests as is the house made Sangria. Try the Caipirihna made with Brazil’s Cachaca, fresh lime juice and sugar.

Roccapulco Supper Club
3140 Mission Street
San Francisco, CA
Doors open at 7:00pm
Presale Tickets: $40.00 (+$5.00)
About Grupo Niche:
Grupo NIche was founded in 1978 in Bogotá, Colombia. Currently based in Cali, Colombia, it enjoys great popularity throughout Latin America. It was founded by Jairo Varela and Alexis Lozano. Jairo Varela has stayed with the group becoming producer, director, songwriter, vocalist and guiro player. Alexis Lozano, trumbone player, later left to form Orquesta Guayacan. It also included Nicolas Cristanelo, on the piano; Francisco Garcia, on the bass; Luis Pacheco, on the congas; as well as vocalists Jorge Bassam and Hector Viveros.
Grupo Niche’s first album: “Al Pasito” was released in 1980, did little to challenge the dominating salsa band of Colombia at the time, Fruko y sus Tesos. The following year, however, the group found success with their second album, “Querer Es Poder”, particularly with the single “Buenaventura y Caney.
The group relocated in 1982 to Cali where they have been based since. After recording two more albums, Grupo Niche released “No Hay Quinto Malo” in 1984, which featured their signature song, “Cali Pachanguero”. The tribute hit single to the “world salsa capital” catapulted Niche as one of the top salsa bands of Colombia.
In 1986, the band incorporated Puerto Rican vocalist Tito Gomez, who had previously worked with the famous Puerto Rican salsa group, la Sonora Ponceña, and Ray Barretto, the Godfather of Latin Jazz. Later that year, Grupo Niche released “Me Huele A Matrimonio”. Afterward, yet another Puerto Rican joined, the pianist Israel Tanenbaum, who would eventually leave the group to join a Niche spin-off band: Orquesta Guayacán.
Grupo Niche is known for both its vigorous, uptempo dance music as well as slower-paced romantic numbers. Among its best known hits are “Cali Pachanguero”, “Del Puente Pa’llá”, “Sin Sentimientos”, “Una Aventura”, “Etnia”, “Gotas de Lluvia”, “Han Cogido la Cosa”, “Mi Pueblo Natal”, Hagamos Lo Que Diga Corazon, “Duele Mas”, “Nuestro Sueño”, and the famous cumbia “Canoa Rancha”. Their most famous song is “Cali Aji”
Some of the most famous singers from Niche throughout its history include Alvaro del Castillo, Tito Gomez, Moncho Santana, Charlie Cardona as well as Willy Garcia and Javier Vasquez, now members of the group ‘Son de Cali‘. They have been very successful, and some of their songs are considered Classics of Salsa Music. The group still enjoys some of its past successes, and, as of 2006, is on tour, making worldwide presentations, and singing their most memorable songs.
