The damage has displaced millions of Cubans, destroying homes, schools, hospitals, factories, and crops. The Disarm Education Fund has been in existence for over thirty years and has been fighting the devastating effects of immoral and unjust foreign policy as they lend a hand to its innocent victims. They provide vital humanitarian assistance, life-saving medicine, and effective advocacy. Disarm has a strong, unequaled track record of providing urgently needed medical aid to Cuba, and their longstanding partners at hospitals and community clinics throughout Cuba are struggling to assist hurricane victims, working in dangerous rubble without basic, life-saving medicine and equipment.

The line-up for this special evening will include: Ivan Camblor, vocals and tres (Cuban Guitar); Livan Montoya, vocals and bass; Mario Silva, trumpet; Osvaldo Carvajal, vocals and percussion; Felix Samuel Perez Diaz, vocals; Sulkary Valverde, vocals.

About Pellego Seco:
Without a doubt, Pellejo Seco marks a new plateau in Latin music in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in the East Bay in 2004 by Ivan Camblor, this eclectic group has its roots in Traditional Cuban music and performs only original compositions The group produces a creative sound which combines the exquisite, popular and fantastic. In its evolutionary process, Pellejo Seco has caught its own distinct flavor which intertwines progressive Fusion Rock, Latin pop, Brazilian, Flamenco, Afro-Cuban and Jazz. Ivan Camblor named the band, Pellejo Seco, and interprets it to mean “Raw Hide.” For Ivan the name has many meanings, one of which is to describe the dry and leathered skin of a “campesino” or farmer. “Enganchate,” is the first CD for Pellejo Seco. The title can be loosely translated to mean “Grab on.” As you listen to this album, you will definitely want to grab onto the exciting rollercoaster of musical themes and genres which winds you through a world full of complex energetic dance rhythms and beautiful love ballads. All the music on this album is composed by Ivan Camblor Allende. Ivan is a new composer from Havana, Cuba. In Cuba, Ivan played his Tres (a Cuban guitar) with many traditional Cuban bands, many of which performed his songs. Other accomplishments for Ivan include a collaboration with Edesio Alejandro, the most prominent Cuban Soundtrack artist today, on two scores for the film, ”Hacerse el Sueco.” Ivan moved to the United States in November 2004 to be with his wife, Deborah Simon-Weisberg, who is also featured on the CD singing “Calma.”

About Gary Flores:
A native of San Francisco, California. Born and raised in the Excelsior District (Outer Mission District). I started playing the Trumpet in 1972 at the age of 19. In 1973, I joined a neighborhood Latin Rock band called Café. In 1974, I joined the great Ritmo 74, which was a very serious and organized band. Ritmo 74 played at all the Big Salsa Shows in the Bay Area featuring the greatest latin bands from New York and Puerto Rico. We performed with Willie Colon with Hector LaVoe, Grand Combo, Bobby Valentine, Ismael Quintana, Ismael Miranda, Eddie Palmieri with Lalo Rodriguez, Papo Lucca and Sonora Poncena, Larry Harlow, Johnny Pacheco,Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano and many others. In 1976, I started a new band called Salsa Caliente. In 1982 I moved to playing piano with the group. Salsa Caliente performed together for about twenty years and was considered the best Salsa Group in the Bay Area; unfortunately to my regret, we never recorded. Many great Musicians came through the Salsa Caliente such as Richard Kermode (Janis Joplin, Malo, Santana), and Luis Gasca (Santana, Malo, Maynard Ferguson, Mongo Santamaria Woody Herman and many others.) Many great local musicians came in and out of Salsa Caliente and are successful band leaders of their own now. After Salsa Caliente, I started a latin jazz group called “Caliente 2000″ where I enjoyed the freedom, individuality and creativity of improvising with this group. The musicians are featured which was very refreshing after backing up singers all the time and the group was smaller. I always loved the Great Jazz Musicians who mastered their instruments and improvised so well like Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, and Dexter Gordon to name a few. So I am attempting to following that path, but with a Latin feel. My major musical influences besides the names just mentioned have been Luis Gasca, Luis “Perico” Ortiz, Richard Kermode, Papo Lucca and many more.

Top 5 Ways to Speed Up Your Salsa Dancing Skills

Top 5 Ways to Speed Up Your Salsa Dancing Skills
Whether you are a beginning, intermediate, or advanced salsa dancer, there are certain tips and tools that will always come in handy when you want to dance at your best. It is one of the greatest things about salsa dancing. We are ALL ALWAYS learning, so that means that even the best dancers that you look up to will never know all there is to know about dancing. If we knew everything there was to know it would quite frankly get boring. Constantly challenging ourselves, as dancers, with new styles, moves and tricks is what keeps us dancing. So with that said there are certain importand tips that will never die. I have been dancing socially for about 10 years now. When I feel myself getting rusty, I revert back to the ‘ol basics.
1. COUNT 123,4,567,8, that is right…it may sound easy, but even now when I dance with experienced dancers I find myself wondering…”What beat are they dancing on?” Count silently in your head, especially when you are just starting out. I kid you not, I was counting out loud on the dance floor for the first 3 years. Not only did it help me to stay on the beat, but if your partner is observant enough, they might actually hear you and follow your lead.
2. Make salsa tension a top priority. Doesn’t matter if you are the leader or the follower. The connection between the two dancers is what makes salsa what it is. Remember the four points of contact in the closed position. The hands, the leaders hand on the followers shoulder blade, the followers hand on the front of the leaders shoulder, and the leaders and followers elbows that line up when in closed position. Remember to meet your partners tension and adjust to each individual.
3. Watch other dancers. Whether it is the class instructor you are watching, dancers in the salsa clubs, or salsa videos. Watch different styles of dancers and pick the styles you want to adapt to your own. There is no right or wrong style of salsa dancing. The more you make the style your own, the more interesting you dancing style will become. So take a little something from everyone, keep what you like and forget what you don’t.
4. Practice the basic step. This should go without saying, but it really does make the biggest difference. Practice in your kitchen, practice when you are walking around your house. The more you engrain the basic step into your muscle memory, the easier all of the other turns and patterns will become. Build a solid foundation with the basic step. It will never fail you.
5.Last, but certainly not least, listen to salsa music. You are what you eat, so to speak. If you listen to salsa music all the time, you will get more and more familiar with how the rhythm of the music progresses, and how your dancing will speed up and slow down with the music. Dancers connection to the music is really what make them amazing dancers. It is not about showing all your flashy moves, it is about letting the music move you.
The most important thing is to enjoy yourself. This may seem like a give in, but it is what salsa dancing is all about. It is natural to get nervous when you are first starting out. But we all started somewhere, so just communicate with the person you are dancing with and just remember that they were right where you are at some point in their dancing lives.
Do you have any tips for salsa dancing?? If so let us hear about them. Add you comments and ideas.

Doug Beaver Y Su Conjunto Rovira at Yoshi’s SF

Live at Yoshi’s
Doug Beaver Y Su Conjunto Rovira
Monday July 14th at 8pm
Doug Beavers and his all-star Bay Area salsa outfit, Conjunto Rovira, has been invited to perform a special concert at Yoshi’s, San Francisco, Monday July 14th, one show at 8pm. Doug Beavers takes his experience performing with Latin music pioneer Eddie Palieri to bring the NUyorican salsa sound to both longtime and new fans of the salsa and Latin Jazz tradition.
Recently earning a Grammy® award for his work on the Eddie Palmieri star-studded 2006 release Listen Here (feat. Michael Brecker, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, John Scofield), Doug Beavers Rovira has made a name in the international jazz and Latin music communities as being both a formidable trombonist and an award-winning arranger. The lessons he learned touring with Eddie Palmieri’s La Perfecta II has enabled him to construct a raw, swinging variety of salsa that pays homage to the old legends while introducing modern harmonic and rhythmic twists to the music. Among the devices learned from these masters is the inclusion of an open-ended descarga (jam session) right in the middle of a tune, often driving up the intensity level and bringing audiences to a fever pitch.
“La Perfecta II was born from the chance opportunity of Doug Beavers’ diligent effort to recover the music that had long since been retired. Mr. Beavers’ brilliantly transcribed the original compositions of La Perfecta. For the efforts of Mr. Beavers, the new millennium finds me truly grateful.” - Eddie Palmieri, liner notes from La Perfecta II.
Featuring: Doug Beavers Rovira, trombone/leader; John Calloway, flute; Mike Olmos, trumpet (Etta James and the Roots Band); Sean Zuniga, congas (Orq. La Verdad); Eric Rangel, timbales (Orq. America); Saul Sierra, bass (Orq. Vission Latina); Marco Diaz, piano (John Santos); with Carlos Rosario, vocals (Chino Nuñez, Orquesta La Verdad).
Yoshi’s San Francisco, 1300 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA 94115. One show @ 8PM. $16. All ages. For tickets: 415.665.5600 or www.yoshis.com

5 of the Greatest Latin Icons of Salsa

Latin Music: 5 of the Greatest Latin Icons of Salsa
Can You Hear that Beat?
When you hear great salsa music, it is almost impossible to keep your body from moving to the beat. Even non dancers find themselves tapping their feet and bobbing their heads.
There is a passion in latin music that we just don’t get in rock and roll, or hip hop, or country. It is in the clave, in the rhythm that hits something at our core and picks us off our feet.
5 of the Greatest Salsa Icons
There are so many latin bands now. But the below few have established themselves as salsa icons.
Celia Cruz
Known to many as the most influencial female figure in the history of cuban music. Celia Cruz was a Cuban salsa singer, and was one of the most successful Cuban performers of the 20th century, with twenty-three gold albums to her name. She was renowned internationally as the “Queen of Salsa,” as well as “La guarachera de Cuba” You can hardly say salsa music nowadays without Celia Cruz coming to mind. One of the most popular songs being “La vida es un Carnival”
El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico
Commonly known as El Gran Combo, is a Puerto Rican Salsa music orchestra. It is Puerto Rico’s most successful musical group, and one of Salsa’s most famous groups across Latin America. Since many of the genre’s legendary singers have been members of the orchestra, the band has been given the moniker La Universidad de la Salsa (The University of Salsa)
Oscar Emilio León Simoza
Better known as Oscar D’León is a Venezuelan musician who became internationally famous for his salsa music. In Spanish, he is known as El Sonero del Mundo (”the Improviser of the World”). His most famous song is perhaps “Llorarás,”. Besides from being a great sonero, he is also showman who knows how to entertain people. He has more than 20 years experience in show business and has recorded 60 albums.A master of dynamics, D’León achieves an exquisite interplay between his lithe, lusty tenor and his trademark, typically Cuban, voz de vieja (old woman’s voice) nasal chorus.
Frankie Ruiz
Jose Antonio Torresola Ruiz also known as “El Papa de la Salsa” made significant contributions to salsa music and specifically to the “salsa sensual” movement, also known as salsa romantica. He helped to revive salsa at a time when its popularity was on a downturn. Ruiz became one of the first idols youth related to because of his own young age, handsome good looks, and true singing ability. A good example of his talents is this song, Bailando from his Serie 32 release.
Hector Lavoe
Hector Lavoe also known as La Voz (the voice) is one of the greats of Salsa. His passionate demeanor was in every part of his life. He never did anything half way. This aspect of his personality shaped his music career. Hector possessed a talent comprised of many elements including, great voice, clear enunciation, marvelous phrasing, and lyrical interpretation. His quick whit and great sense of humor is evident in his tremendous ability to improvise or sonear. During live performances, he never sang a song the same way twice.
Salsa Music Today:
These artists have set the scene for how salsa music is today. You will still here great songs now and for years to come in the salsa clubs. These are just a few of the talented artists in the salsa scene, but they have made a lasting impact. Keep an eye out for the bands that are starting today, they will be the ones to shape our salsa future.

Celebrating El Dia De San Juan.
Anthony Cruz Performing Live at
Roccapulco Supper Club
Saturday June 28th
Roccapulco Supper Club
3140 Mission Street. San Francisco, CA
Tickets: $25.00
About Anthony Cruz:
Salsa vocalist Anthony Cruz was born in New Jersey, footsteps away from the simmering New York salsa scene. As a child of only five, Cruz distinguished himself via talent shows and competitions as a sonero to watch. He began working shortly thereafter, singing coro for Pedro Conga y Su Orquesta Internacional, as well as singing sessions for Roberto Lugo, Pedro Arroyo, and Mario Ortiz, to name a few. He was signed to the Musical Productions label, releasing his solo debut, Algo Nuevo, in 1990. The disc went gold, generating radio hits like “Si Supieras” and “Tu Traicion.” Cruz’s follow-up release, Para Ti in 1993, generated some airplay, but experienced significantly less success than its predecessor. Cruz’s third self-titled release featured the popular song “Cuanto Te Amo,” getting him back on the charts after a six-year slump. Una Vez Mas was released in 1998, and was met again with interest if not impressive sales. Lacking a strong fan base in the States, Cruz spent the next period of time touring extensively throughout Latin America. One of few artists who has stayed with one label for the majority of his recording career, Cruz released two more records with Musical Productions, Un Nuevo Amanecer in 2002 and Para Mi Gente in 2007. The former generated a good deal of radio play through 2003 and 2004 with songs like “Que Bombon” and “Ven.”

About Orquestra Baobab:
Formed in Dakar, Senegal in 1970 by saxophonist Baro N’Diaye and bassist Sidathe Ly, Orchestra Baobab quickly became one of the world’s most innovative and important musical ensembles. The group’s music resides where Afro-Cuban and Portuguese styles collide with Congolese rumba, highlife, calypso, and American soul. Dakar, one of the world’s great port cities, has been exposed to an array of cultural influences for centuries—African, European, Latin American, Islamic. Orchestra Baobab combines these influences, pioneering a sound that is at once local and global. Their Yoshi’s dates are the first of a month-long North American summer tour to support the release of their new CD Made in Dakar (World Circuit/Nonesuch), of which the New York Times has written: “There isn’t likely to be a more buoyant or affirmative-sounding release this year than Made in Dakar by the legendary Orchestra Baobab.”

salsa Dance Lessons 8:30-9:30 Doors 8pm, $10 cover / $5 students
About the New Swing Sextet:
A Product of of New York City and the excitement and Turbulence of the sixties, the new swing Sextet made it’s professional debut performing in the singer bowl at the last New York worlds fair in 1965. The Band has been a popular and innovative exponent of latin Jazz, Salsa and pop music for nearly four decades
Composed of vocals, piano, vibes, bass and Latin percussion, the original New Swing broke up in the late seventies after successfully recording, touring and doing all the hot club dates that the New York metropolitan area had to offer. In recent years most of the groups core members have reunited and have been performing with Mambo Negro the highly popular Latin jazz ensemble, which performs regularly in and around the tri-state area. However, you can’t buy or replace 40 years of history, and on special occasions the band performs as the New Swing. The New Swing offers an established and respected name with a sound from another era, which has been perfectly preserved and bottled for another generation to enjoy.
The band was part of a young crop (and new breed of aspiring Latin musicians) who grew up in the greater New York Metropolitan tri-state area with its rich ethnic mix and diverse inner-city culture, while at the same time growing up surrounded by the Latin music explosion happening in the region.

SalsabyJake’s Salsa classes are taught with all dancing levels in mind, going into important detail about the patterns taught, and the means for making them easy to dance, and attractive to watch. Classes are kept “light” too, so that even those dancers struggling with new moves for the first time feel at ease and remember that dancing is for fun!
About Julio Bravo:
Julio Bravo y su Orquesta Salsabor has been together for over five years now. This group of dynamic musicians has created a flavor all its own. Beyond the talent of each individual member is a unique blend of vocal style unlike other salsa bands in the Bay Area. Performing contemporary salsa hits, Merengue, Boleros and traditional classics, as well as Latin Jazz is becoming the leading trend, with weekly performances in the Bay Area’s major events, private parties and grand opening presentations.
